UASLA 2008 Awards Program: Call for Entries

The Utah Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is pleased to issue a formal call for entries for the 2008 Utah ASLA Awards Program. Entry forms are available on the "Documents" page of this webpage.

Participation in the awards program will help broaden professional boundaries, increase public awareness of the role of landscape architects, raise the standards of the discipline, and bring recognition to organizations and individuals who demonstrate superior skill in the practice and/or study of landscape architecture. A jury of qualified out-of-state professionals will review each submittal and determine winners in each award category.

Winners will receive their awards and will be honored by having their work presented April 11, 2008 at the Utah ASLA 2008 Annual Meeting at the Homestead Resort in the Heber Valley. Award winning projects will also be featured in upcoming ASLA chapter newsletters, and will be used for displays promoting the profession.

Entries are due by 5:00 pm Friday, March 14, 2008. Delivery must be via mail, express mail, or hand delivery (no electronic submissions are accepted) to: ASLA Awards Program Justin Hamula, ASLA Awards Program Chair 1452 East Hudson Avenue Salt Lake City, Utah 84106 E-mail: jhamula@hunterindustries.com Cell: 801-231-9504

For Immediate Release:

Attention all Utah landscape architects,

There is good reason to celebrate! Governor Huntsman has now signed H.B.13, the “Occupational and Professional Licensing Sunset Amendment”. This amends the Legislative Oversight and Sunset Act and thereby eliminates repeal dates for the licensure of certain occupations and professions by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, including landscape architecture. You can read the bill and the history of its quick journey through the legislature here:

http://www.le.state.ut.us/~2005/htmdoc/hbillhtm/hb0013.htm

This means the landscape architects licensing act will not be subject to sunset review again (it was scheduled for 2008). This is a major victory for all Utah licensed landscape architects and especially for the ASLA Utah Chapter which spearheaded the drive to include our law in this legislation. Special thanks goes to Jan Streifel, FASLA for her work on our behalf at the critical time during the Christmas holidays, and to Julia Lent, ASLA National Manager for State Government Affairs for alerting the Utah chapter to this bill when it was first introduced in the Fall.

John C. Ellsworth, FASLA Utah Chapter Vice-President for Education and Licensure

Founded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects is the national professional association representing landscape architects. Beginning with 11 original members, ASLA has grown to more than 15,000 members and 48 chapters, representing all 50 states, US territories, and 42 countries around the world. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship. The Utah Chapter of ASLA specifically represents the landscape architects of the State of Utah. ###
